I trained as a microbiologist because they told me I couldn't make a living as a writer...so this could get a little long.

I think I may have started the band, even if it was by accident. I have been singing since I could remember, and took up the guitar at the age of 8. My long-suffering parents listened to me murdering it for about four years until I got good enough to actually listen to. But this early initiative paid off in the end, as it encouraged the others to take up their instruments as well.

I have also the distinction of being the only person in the band who can sort of read notes...slowly...if I stare at them a long time. We mostly learn and play music by ear, and have found musical notation unnecessary. Since we don't read or write it well enough to be useful, we all consider ourselves musically illiterate.

In addition to playing guitar and mandolin in the band, I also sometimes take up violin, viola, and dulcimer. I currently teach high-school math and science, and reside with my husband (note the difference of last name) in Montrose, MN.
